The Watersprite Film Festival returns to St John’s

This weekend St John’s College will host emerging filmmaking talent and internationally acclaimed professionals, such as film director Mike Leigh, as part of the 9th Watersprite Film Festival.

Watersprite, the international student-let film festival, will feature free film screenings, Q&As with film-makers, and talks from industry-leading guest speakers. Every event in the program is free and open to everyone.

Over the course of the weekend 29 student films, shortlisted from over 390 entries will compete for this year’s prestigious Watersprite Awards, which celebrate the next generation of international filmmaking. The festival will host shortlisted filmmakers from Brazil, Israel, the USA, Russia, South Africa, the Philippines, Europe, and the UK.

This year the festival also welcomes internationally recognised filmmakers including BAFTA-award winning director Mike Leigh, Sarah Phelps screenwriter and adaptor of JK Rowling's The Casual Vacancy and Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, Suzie Davies the BAFTA and Oscar nominated Production Designer of Mr Turner and Swallows and Amazons, and previous Watersprite winner William McGregor who has since directed Poldark and One of Us.

Events across the weekend will explore a range of subjects including representation in film, authentic documentary storytelling, and how new online platforms are affecting the industry as well as masterclasses in funding, directing, and editing a film. Attendees will also be able to experience the effects of virtual reality in the Watersprite Mesmerise Hub.
