William Wesley Ellison, generally known as Wesley or WWE, was born in 1917 in Barrow-in-Furness. His father was the town's mayor. Ellison studied at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge in the 1930s and became a partner in Poole & Son solicitors.

Glanville Llewellyn Williams (1911–1997) completed a PhD in Law at St John's in 1936, and taught at the College from 1935 to 1945.
