Or. 3. The legend of Susenyos.

Parchment (2 pieces). Roll 1410 x 105mm. Probably 19th century. The text, in Ge'ez, comprises the legend of Susenyos, a pseudo-magical text used to protect against women's problems and infant mortality and illness. The owner's name is given as Amätä Maryam. Written in black and red ink and decorated with two coloured pictures. The text is worn in places. Given by Marcus Werner (BA 2005), July 2008.

    Vellum, 11.9 x 8.1, ff. 62 + 2, double columns of 31 lines.  Late 15th cent., in a clear black hand.

    Binding, rough skin on boards, clasps gone.

Browne 1440. An Ethiopian magic scroll.

Parchment (3 pieces). Roll 1700 x 75mm. Late 19th to early 20th century.

The text comprises a prayer for binding demons and for protection from various evil spirits.

Written in black and red ink and decorated (including a picture of a winged angel carrying a sword).

AUGUSTINI QUAEDAM

    Vellum, 13.1 x 9, ff. 307 + 1, double columns of 50 lines.  14th cent., in a fine round hand influenced by Italian script, but English.  2 fo. qui enim.
