St John's College U.67-8 and U.69-70

Annotated copies of the 1674 Bodleian Library catalogue.

Two copies of Thomas Hyde's Catalogus impressorum librorum bibliothecæ Bodleianæ in academia Oxoniensi (Oxford, 1674) interleaved and annotated with details of the books held in St John's College Library Cambridge. The entries are arranged alphabetically by author or uniform title. The printed pages carry handwritten classmarks beside those items found in St John's Library, while the interleaved pages supply author, title, imprint, and classmark for items found in St John's but not included in the printed catalogue. Both copies have suffered from heavy use and are lacking many printed and interleaved pages, especially U.67-8. A pencil note inside the upper board of U.67 reads '1674 edn of the Bodleian Library Catalogue used by St.J.C.L. previous to the vellum bound copy', while a note in the same hand inside U.69 reads '1674 edn of Bodleian Library Catalogue used by St.J.C.L. until certainly 1763'. Entries relating to the acquisition of these catalogues have not been found in the College rentals.
