A.S. Tetley, copies of Greek and Latin prose and verse compositions. c. 1889.

 

Alfred Samuel Tetley (1868-1916) came to St John's College in 1887 from Taunton Grammar School and graduated BA with a 1st class in Classics in 1890. He subsequently pursued a career as a schoolmaster.

This volume contains fair copies of Greek and Latin prose and verse compositions copied out by Tetley when an undergraduate. His name appears on the front flyleaf with the date 'June /89'. The English passage for translation and the Greek or Latin rendering appear on facing pages. The source of the English passage is generally given, and the person responsible for the Greek or Latin version is often identified by initials or name. The initials given are A.S. (Arthur Sidgwick), R.W., R.S. (Richard Shilleto), H.R.T. (Harry Rede Tottenham), F.R.W., F.J.H.J., A.W.V., B.H.K., A.H., G.H.R., A.W.P., W.W. (William Wyse), and F.A.P. J.P. Postgate, G.M. Edwards, A.H. Cook, R.D. Archer-Hind, S.H. Butcher, W.H. Bateson, R.C. Jebb, and T. Moss are identified by name.

This volume was formerly in the possession of Mr J.B.C. Crompton, scholar of St John's College Oxford, who died in 1963. It was given to the Library by Mr R.G. Pritchard in July 1963. A note of provenance appears inside the front cover and three letters relating to the donation of the volume are pasted in at the end.
