William Springett and William Soames (?), 'Tabula Angliae'. Latin, 1638

'Tabula Angliae Script' Ann: dm: 1638', a complete valuation of all the benefices in England and Wales, arranged by county. Including a list of 'Additiones' (fos 263-9) it lists 9407 benefices, with a total annual value of just over £113,270. Cf. SJC, MS H.20. At the end of the volume is a seventeenth-century copy of a charter of John, 30 Aug. 1199, referenced 'E Monastico Anglicano [Sir William Dugdale, Monasticon Anglicanum (1655)], p. 191, Chartae Antiquae Lib. B Num. 8'.

194x150 mm. vii+269+xxxii (blank)+3 fos. Many pen flourishes at beginning and end, including 'Samuel [?]Norton'. On fo. iir: 'Mille modis querulu''. Formerly classed as 'H.4.38' (cancelled inside front cover). The names William Springet and William Somes are added in a seventeenth-century hand to the title at p. iiir. A William Springett (1621-44) and a William Soame both matriculated from St Catharine's College, Cambridge in 1637, while a Samuel Norton matriculated form the same College in 1638. At fo. iii verso: 'Ex dono Roberti Grove A.M. hujus Collegii Socii & Academiae Registrarii Principalis' [Robert Grove (1669/70-1726), Fellow of St John's and Registrary of the University].

The main text in a neat secretary hand, the copy of King John's charter in a smaller hand. Paper. Leather on boards.
