Edward Herbert, 1st Baron Herbert of Cherbury (1583-1648): 'De Veritate', apparently autograph. Concluded at fo. 327: 'Parisiis consummatum 20/30 Juni (?) 1623'. The many corrections in the same hand, leave the text identical with or close to the printed edition of 1633. Perhaps the clandestine edition printed in 1624? Author's inscription on flyleaf of vol. 2: 'Author Ed. Herbert mil. De le Bath. Authore Autograph' 1619'. Fos 283-286 are in a different hand. This is, apparently, the third MS of the De Veritate, after two redactions in the British Library: Sloane 3957 and Stokes 7081. With two letters from Mario M. Rossi of the University of Naples, 12 Feb. and 6 Mar. 1937, and a reply from the Librarian, 27 Feb. 1937. A note on the MS appears in Rossi's La vita, le opere, i tempi di Edoardo Herbert di Chirbury (3 vols, Bibl. Storica Sansoni, n.s. 14, Firenze, 1947).
325x230 mm., 345x242 mm. as boxed; 327 numbered folios in two vols; fos 283-327 (originally numbered 556-600) follow two unnumbered blank leaves; inscribed by Thomas Baker on the flyleaves to both vols: 'Liber olim ornatissimi viri Thomae Wagstaff' and 'Tho: Baker dedit Coll: Jo: Socius ejectus'. Small College bookplate (eighteenth century) in vol. 1.
